Helmet Advice When purchasing a helmet for your child, ensure a proper fit. There are many sports stores that have knowledgeable staff who can assist you to find the best fitting helmet for your child. In my experience with my own children and the skaters at our school, Bell and Protec are the best fitting brands of helmet. These two brands just seem to easily fit and properly cover most heads. They offer many difference styles and price ranges. If a helmet slides around on your child’s head, it may be too big or it just may not be the right helmet for the shape of your child’s head. You could try adding thicker pads to the inside of the helmet or trying another brand. Go for comfort. If the helmet doesn’t feel good, your child will have a reason to take it off and not wear it. Helmets, generally, should last about 5 years with normal wear and tear. A single impact type of helmet should be replaced after a single very hard impact to the helmet or if the inside material is breaking down or cracking. A multi impact helmet can support multiple very hard impacts but its performance will be reduced after each impact. Please don’t hand down helmets to younger siblings. Take them to the store to be fitted for a new helmet. |
